National Foot Care Week: A Busy Mum's Essential Guide To Caring For Your Feet

Posted by Natalie Dawson on

Being a new mum is an exhilarating journey filled with countless moments of joy, but it's also a whirlwind of sleepless nights, endless nappy changes, and non-stop caregiving. We are always on the go, and our feet can take a pounding. In the midst of all the chaos, it's easy to overlook our own needs, particularly when it comes to self-care. However, as I've learned through my own experiences, neglecting our feet can have serious consequences for our overall well-being. That's why, in honour of National Foot Care Week, I want to share with you some comprehensive tips for caring for your feet as a busy mum.

1. Prioritise Hygiene

Amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, it's crucial to prioritise foot hygiene. With all the running around we do, our feet can quickly accumulate dirt and sweat, creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. Make it a habit to wash your feet daily, paying special attention to the spaces between your toes where moisture tends to linger. After washing, ensure your feet are completely dry to prevent fungal infections like athlete's foot. The last thing we need as a busy new Mum is to get an infection or worse, and even though it feels easy to jump in and out of the shower, paying a bit of extra attention is really worth it.

2. Invest in Supportive Footwear

As much as we may love our fashionable shoes and heels, nothing is more important than comfort and support, especially when you're constantly on your feet caring for your little one! Opt for shoes that offer ample cushioning and good arch support to alleviate pressure and reduce the risk of foot fatigue. Remember that your feet can change size after having a baby, and having a supportive pair of shoes can make all the difference in preventing common foot ailments such as plantar fasciitis and heel pain.

3. Take Regular Breaks

As mums, we're often guilty of putting everyone else's needs before our own, but it's essential to carve out moments of respite for ourselves, particularly for our hardworking feet. Whenever possible, take short breaks to give your feet a rest. Whether you're sitting down to feed your baby or enjoying a brief moment of relaxation, elevate your feet to promote circulation and reduce swelling. Even a few minutes of elevation can provide much-needed relief for tired, achy feet.

4. Hydrate and Moisturise

Just like the rest of our body, our feet need hydration to stay healthy and supple. Incorporate moisturising into your daily routine by applying a nourishing foot cream or lotion after bathing or before bedtime. Pay special attention to areas prone to dryness, such as the heels and balls of your feet. For an extra treat, indulge in a luxurious foot mask or soak to soften calluses and soothe rough patches. 5. Indulge in Self-Care with a Foot Pamper Session

Treat yourself to a rejuvenating foot pamper session whenever you can find a spare moment. My personal favourite? Using the Foot Pamper Set from my own range here at Awesome Botanical. With its indulgent array of foot scrubs, creams, and soothing balms, it's the perfect way to pamper yourself and show your hardworking feet some well-deserved love.

6. Incorporate Foot Exercises into Your Routine

Just like any other part of our body, our feet benefit from regular exercise to stay strong and flexible. Incorporate simple foot exercises and stretches into your daily routine to improve circulation, strengthen muscles, and prevent stiffness. Try rolling a tennis ball under your foot, flexing and pointing your toes, or performing calf stretches to keep your feet in top condition. Check out this article for some exercises to help…

7. Listen to Your Feet

Lastly, listen to what your feet are telling you. If you're experiencing persistent pain, discomfort, or any unusual symptoms, don't ignore them. Ignoring foot problems can lead to more serious issues down the line, so it's essential to seek professional help if needed. Whether it's a podiatrist, physiotherapist, or orthopaedic specialist, don't hesitate to reach out for expert advice and treatment.
